Red, Red Velvet

Do you guys remember making salt dough ornaments in elementary school?  You make this salty dough, sculpt it into lopsided snowmen or snowflakes, let it dry and voila!  A sturdy little ornament for Mom or Dad.

Well, I'm bringing the salt dough ornament back.  Because I'm cool like that.

(Disclaimer, as much as I love Christmas - this is NOT a Christmas tree.  Just some shrubbery outside my front door.  I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I'm some weirdo who loves to take pictures of trees)

Here is what you need to get started:

- 1 c. flour
- 1/2 c. salt
- 1 c. water

Heat oven to 250 degrees.

Mix ingredients, and then turn out onto a flour covered surface and knead until smooth and elastic (about 5-7 minutes)  And no, the dough hook on your stand mixer won't work.  I tried cheating too but there isn't enough dough for the dough hook to do any good.  Sorry charlie.  I did however, tone my arms and burn some calories while kneading so WIN for me.

Once you're done kneading - roll out the dough like cookie dough, to about 1/4 of an inch.  Cut shapes with cookie cutters and place on cookie sheet.  I used the end of a straw to poke a nice hole in the top to thread the ribbon through.  Make sure you do this BEFORE you bake them!  Then, if you want to stamp them do this before baking as well.  You can stamp right onto the dough, just like paper.  

Put the ornaments in the oven and let bake for about 4 hours.  When they are done and cooled, you can spray with acrylic or a sealer of some sort to preserve them.

I think these would make adorable gift tags too - you could definitely attach them to packages or gift bags.  Add some glitter or paint.  Maybe some rhinestones.  Use your imagination!
