Hot Glue Snowflake Ornament

We're all friends here, right?

So you won't think less of me if I tell you about my semi craft fail?

Last week I was surfing through Pinterest and found a really cute and interesting (ie easy) looking pin that involved hot glue and glitter and created these adorable little snowflake ornaments for Christmas.

I thought to myself, "Self!  How hard can this be?  A little hot glue, a little glitter and ta da!  Total cuteness"

Well - it didn't exactly work out that way.  It wasn't a complete fail but... either a) my hot glue gun sucks or b) I don't have the steadiest of hands.  Or c) both of the above.

My glue gun kept globbing out (totally a real thing) and it was stringy and messy but once the glue dried, I just trimmed up my snowflakes with scissors to give them cleaner lines.  If you have a better quality glue gun than I do and have steadier hands, I promise you that your snowflakes will look nicer!

Here's what I used:

- a silpat mat
- hot glue gun
- mod podge
- glitter
- ornament hangers

My tutorial varies a little from the original.  If you have a silpat mat, mine is much simpler - if not, head over to Under the Table and Dreaming for hers.

You can print off a template for snowflakes from the internet, or you can free hand it.  I chose to free hand it - which may also explain why mine look less than stellar.

Anyway - draw your snowflake directly onto your silpat.  Try to keep even pressure and don't shake too much.  Make sure you make them big enough that the glue doesn't run together.

Let cool, trim off uneven edges.  Then paint a thin layer of Mod Podge on top of your ornament and cover with glitter.  Shake off excess and let dry.  I added an ornament hanger or you could use thread or even ribbon.

These actually look pretty on my tree (prettier from a distance, I'm not gonna lie...), especially at night with the lights twinkling behind them.  I might give them another go with a better glue gun and see what happens!
