A Burlap "Flower"... sort of

There must be something in the air this week because after Miranda's little pot issue -- no not THAT kind of pot issue -- her cast iron pot issue, I had my own issues with a flower. Fabric flowers are something I have made before so I'm not sure what my deal is but man, I had some problems with this one. Don't mind me while I babble on about it for a bit, I'm a little traumatized.

As you all know, No Name #2 is a-coming. I've been trying to think ahead about what we will want to do for her little photo session and I saw some cute headbands on Pinterest and thought to myself "Self, you need to make one of those." The one thing I failed to tell myself is that half of my brain and thinking capacity seems to be gone. A lot of the headbands that I saw had feathers and veils and giant, swallow your baby, flowers on them. None of that will fly in this house. Allen would take one look at them and they would be no more. I decided to find some flower tutorials and see if I could design my own. Yup, I'm fancy like that. I found a cute tutorial from The Decorated House for a couple different burlap flowers and thought that they would work perfectly. I even had all the supplies I needed - YAY!

Enter the materials. I grabbed some leftover burlap from a fall project and some tulle that was leftover from a wreath and decided to get fancy and make a flower. I tried and tried to do the flower the way the tutorial described but my brain could not get it to work. Every time I tried to fold the fabrics, my flower turned into a swirled cinnamon bun (my mom's words not mine). Finally I gave up. If one of you can explain it to me better, please please do!! I decided it was time to improvise because I refused to give up.

Here's what I did -- I took the two strips of fabric and tied them together with a knot on one end. After tying the knot, I started to wrap the tulle around the knot, twisting it as I went. I also hot glued the fabric to keep it in place as I twisted and wrapped. After making a small flower, I glued the end and started wrapping the burlap. I did it exactly the same as the tulle, just wrapping, twisting and glueing. After I glued the ends down, I glued an extra piece of burlap to the back to secure the flower. I didn't love the center of the flower so I added a few jeweled buttons to the center... and then I stepped away and looked at my flower. It was at that moment I started thinking that it looks a lot like a bird's nest. I'm not sure that I want to put a bird's nest on No Name's head. I sent Miranda a picture of it and she told me that bird's nests are really in right now so who know, maybe I'll start a newborn trend. What do you think??
