Etched Glass Milk & Cookies Set with Martha Stewart Crafts

Yesterday, my husband texted me about Mother's Day plans - informing me that Mother's Day was THIS coming weekend.  I panicked, because I didn't realize it was coming up so soon - but later realized he was wrong - Mother's Day isn't this coming weekend, it's May 12th.  Whew!  I had a few minutes to gather myself and decide on a perfect Mother's Day gift for my Mom.  Recently, I got a box of Martha Stewart craft supplies in the mail, courtesy of Plaid Crafts.  Side note: Nothing makes a craft bloggers day quite like a box of craft supplies, particularly from Martha Stewart. Her stuff is just

I quickly spotted the glass etching cream and knew I had to come up with a project for it.  Do you guys craft that way?  Spot a cool product first and THEN dream up fun craft ideas?

If you've been a reader of this blog, you might remember that we don't do a lot of sugar in this house.  I used to be a HUGE baker, but have become passionate about eating local, whole foods as much as possible and cutting out processed foods and sugar.  But my kids are still kids and they love a good cookie from time to time.  Enter, Grandma.  Or Grammy, or Mimi...take your pick.

That's my Mom, with my niece Rhea.  Both beautiful girls, aren't they?

My Mom is always good to have some special treats on hand when the grandkids come to visit.  I thought a personalized milk jug, a cookie jar and some special little glasses would be the perfect gift.  The kids will know it's going to be a good time when they see these on the counter in the kitchen, and my Mom will always have something special to use to create a treat tradition when the kids come to visit!

If you want to make your own version of this milk and cookie jar, follow along!

You'll need:
- Martha Stewart glass etching cream
- Martha Stewart adhesive letter stencils
- small paint brush (comes with the glass etching cream!)
- glass jars
- delicious homemade cookies (optional)

I have to stop here and say how much I love that Martha Stewart includes a small paintbrush with the etching cream.  I was worried it might not work well, because sometimes the free additions to craft supplies aren't the greatest, but this was perfect!  I loved that the handle was short, because it gave me great control over where I was applying the etching cream.  You want to be careful, because it will etch any glass surface it comes in contact with - and I wanted to make SURE it stayed on the stencil.

Grab the glass containers you want to etch, and apply adhesive stencils.  These stencils from Martha Stewart are great - they adhere well, they are reusable, re-positionable, and you can wash them!  LOVE.

It can be a little tricky to stick them onto a curved surface, which is why it's awesome they they can be removed and repositioned. I did it a LOT and they are still very sticky!  Clean your glass surface with rubbing alcohol, soap & water and dry well.

Then, carefully apply the etching cream.  And I do mean carefully.  You may even want to wear gloves .  Make sure you apply a nice even, thick layer of etching cream.  And again, be careful not to get your cream on any part of the glass you don't want to be etched.  You can use painters tape for extra protection if you want to.

Let this set for at least 15 minutes.  I let mine go for 30, because I'm paranoid like that.  Then, just rinse the etching cream with water and let dry.

You can see I did a milk jug, a cookie jar and 2 glasses with my boy's initials on them.  I'm going to add 2 more glasses with my nieces initials and make a full set for my Mom.

Because really, is there anything better than cookies and milk with grandma?

Heck, I might even have to make a glass with MY initial on it so I can participate in this little tradition too!

So I know you are reading this thinking, "HOW CAN I GET MY VERY OWN MARTHA STEWART GLASS ETCHING CREAM?!"  Well fear not, because Michaels is well stocked with supplies to make your own Mothers Day project so head over to Michaels and stock up!
